The Republic of Kryta: GW2
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_M...t_of_the_World
This links tells what is going on between GW:EN and GW2
Quote:
In Divinity's Reach, the new queen of Kryta established a system of government designed to give all people—not just native Krytans—a voice. Senators design law, proposing their measures to the queen, who authorizes or rejects their placement into society. These senators come from all human races, representing many voices working in tandem with the queen's will. Initially, this system was designed as a temporary government for the refugee camps, but in the 150 years since the flood of Lion's Arch, it has become a stable system, a respected government, and a cornerstone of Krytan culture.
|
Judging by this info, I'm guessing Kryta will become a republic, since republic governments usually have senators as representatives in their congress or so. Hey, a first government in GW that is not a monarchy, nice.

The Istani government wasn't a monarchy. They just had a council of elders.

Well the Istani government would most likely be Feudalism, which is almost similar to a monarchy, but not completely exact.

Kryta would be a Constitutional Monarchy, similar to Canada in a way.

If you actually read the section about Cantha, that place will end up like North Korea.

LOL, I know you're kidding, but Sparta was not a democracy.
That said, neither was Greece a true democracy, and the women of Sparta might have had more freedoms than the women of Greece...
For sure, no woman Queen in either society! In that way, Kryta is very different...

From what I understand, the women of Sparta had more freedoms than the men of Sparta...

Greece was democratic, but truely democratic in our standards (i.e. freedom of speech and such). And rome was a republic and has Senators. A government having senators doesn't mean a democracy.

Well there is one thing i put my hopes into: I want Kryta to have army where man from all nations wear same armors. It would be weird if warrior guards would have diffrent armors. One to wear something like Sunspear and one like Ascalon Guard and one like Lionguard. Proffesion speciffic armor but all nations in same type of armor. So they match. May be weird but i rly love it when army looks good in games.
Sure they can have some Elite units where they would have diffrent armors but not very diffrent. It still has to be recognizeable. And when they design guards i hope they will take a bit from evry culture of man a bit. Some details of Ascalon, some of Kryta, some of Cantha (if there would be any Canthans there) some of Istan, Vabbi and Koruna or if that is too much just some of Koruna.

What about ancient Rome? During the period of the Empire, Rome had an Emperor and senator. I guess it could be a system like that. A monarch at the top with senators making laws, which need to be accepted by the monarch.

Well the title of Emperor in Roman government was never truely intended. Juliuas Ceasar declared himself dictator legally according to Roman law and he did very well. The senate and the people liked him and so his lineage became something of a dynasty. I digress though. The new Krytan model does sound like a republic. As far as Istan a council of Elders sounds like a tribal government in that there are no elected representatives simply the oldest members of each tribe/clan/family/social group speaking and acting on behalf of the tribe/clan/family/social group they represent. It's sort of like a Republic but without elections. I wouldn't go so far as to call it feudalism though at least not in the traditional sense.

Well, at the risk of going off-topic, does anybody really know?
I found this from one page:
http://elysiumgates.com/~helena/Women.html
Quote:
When girls reached sexual maturity they were not rushed—as were their sisters throughout the rest of the contemporary world—into marriage and childbed. On the contrary, the Spartan laws explicitly advocated marrying girls only after they had reached an age to "enjoy sex." The reasoning was simple: for young girls not yet psychologically ready for sexual intimacy, sex was an "act of violence." Nor were Spartan girls married to much older men as was usual in other Greek cities. It is estimated that most Spartan wives were only 4 to 5 years younger than their husbands.
|
While this source says something completely different:
http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehisto...nofsparta.html
Quote:
Marriage for a Spartan woman was an almost non-ceremonial event. The woman was abducted in the night by her suitor, her head was shaved, and she was made to wear men's clothing and lye on a straw pallet in the dark. From there on she would meet with her husband for almost entirely procreative reasons. If she was formerly a girl, she became a woman through marriage. Any Spartan man could abduct a wife, which led to a system of polyandry (many husbands, one wife or vice versa) in Sparta. When a child was born, the woman had little to do with the his/her upbringing, rather nurses handled the child's care (in addition, a female Spartan child was subject to the same tests of strength as a male child.).
|
To tie this into Guild Wars: Apparently, the Spartan King Leonidas was a Dorian. Perhaps King Doric was named after the Dorians?

Possibly not. It could even be that both accounts are true, except at different times in history, or different spins on the same truth. (The abduction mentioned in the second passage could, for instance, be the ceremony, prearranged between the involved parties. It wasn't uncommon in early cultures for marriage ceremonies to essentially be mock kidnappings, harkening back to days when the kidnapping would have been more literal.)
That said, in the case of the women, there is actually some doubt as to how much freedom they had. The men, on the other hand, we know - they all went straight into the army, and if they weren't good enough for the army, they were culled.

You can have a thousand ways in which to organize a statel, and senates and monarchs are not automatically impossible to fit into the same one. Heck, take a look at the english system...

LOL, no I did not mean that.
I was just commenting the name Doric probably came from the Dorian tribe, and found it interesting that King Leonidas was from the tribe as well.
Probably just coincidence.
